The Scoop on What Salary Interior Designer Professionals Can Expect
Wondering what salary interior designer professionals can expect to make? According to the American Society of Interior Designers in 2006, if you're just starting out, the average interior design salary is $30,000 a year. After three to four years, you can add another $5,000 to your interior design salary expectations. If you're a project manager, you can command $50,000 to $55,000 a year. Hoping to make six figures? Start your own design firm or become a partner at a profitable design business and you can expect to make $100,000 or more. To command the highest salary interior designer professionals seek, get the best education, business background, and fine tune your designer skills.

I've been in the profession for many years now. I have a master's degree in interior design, have worked in the field for 18 years and have also taught at the university level for 4 years. What every aspiring design professional needs to know is this: the true profession of interior design is very demanding, very competitive, and is not nearly as well-paying or lucrative as most salary surveys describe. After a number of years in the profession, many people leave the field because of the disparity between the long difficult hours expected and the meager salary that comes with the work it takes to do the job well. And as one moves up the ladder in terms of years of experience, it becomes increasingly more difficult to command the salary increases that this site mentions, simply because most employers want to and are willing to keep designers' salaries low by hiring the youngest people coming fresh out of school. Also realize that this profession is subject to the storms of economic fluctuations; typically interior design services are the first to be cut out of projects when the economy takes a downturn. One really needs to have a second income of some sort to weather these constant ups and downs or be independently wealthy to get through them or start his or her own firm. Be sure you are prepared to fall back on at least one or two other skills that will pay your bills when things are not so great.
